One more thought on financing vaccines. The range of prices per dose are all well below $100. The pandemic is so very expensive that any price in that range is cheap. Yes, it’s great to buy it for $1, but a big emphasis on price seems misguided. The emphasis should be on speed.

We are in a very lucky position and have several safe and efficacious vaccines. Let’s make use of them and produce enough for everyone. As fast as we can.

the marginal social value of a vaccine dose is at least 50x higher than 100$

Without even trying to put a value on human life, what has been the cost of the pandemic to the global economy? How will the total cost of the vaccines themselves compare, even at $100/dose?

Many countries cannot afford that price

Wouldn't health care companies want people innoculated? Seems like in their best interest. True cost of minimizing spread—via mass vaccinations—is probably orders of magnitude less than avg cost per admitted COVID patient.

Speed and quality is the first thing you learn in higher educated level business processeses. Without quality: Have fun with speed and side effects. Without speed: Have fun not being able to use it. They need each other to excell.

100% agree. Also, if we think about all the additional costs that are involved in vaccinations - logistics, medical supplies, storage, staff, management. The cost of the actual vaccine itself becomes less and less important.

Regardless of the opportunity cost (and how that is reduced by speed of deployment), the price of a vaccine is just a small component of the cost to deliver it into someone's arm. Doubling or trebling the price paid for the vaccine makes little %age difference to the total cost.
