I’m very worried about the pandemic in Mexico. This is the test positivity rate of the country. Pretty much linear growth, now at 56.7%. This means the country confirms a case for every 1.76 test they do. Hey @MaxCRoser, @OurWorldInData: México’s coronavirus czar, @HLGatell, is misinformating the country with your data. Even when you’ve explained that confirmed cases depend on testing, he’s selectively using your charts to claim Mexico is bending the curve and defeating #COVID19: https://twitter.com/HLGatell/status/1257694746962792450 … pic.twitter.com/Y83IRzEIk3

Another way to say it, almost 2 of 3 tests are positive :-(

Also one of lowest test rates in the world, only testing people with serious symptoms

Occasionally in some states the positivity rate is as high as 100%.

Yes, and Peru is doing even worse I am afraid :-( Here is a representation of the percentages. https://twitter.com/Marco_Piani/status/1274793727568023556?s=20 … similar to what you have here. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/covid-19-daily-tests-vs-daily-new-confirmed-cases-per-million?xScale=linear&yScale=linear&zoomToSelection=true&time=2020-04-24..&country=CAN~CRI~CUB~SLV~MEX~PAN~USA … Probably I will have to include some higher-percentage slopes :-(

#COVID19 Worldwide: Trajectories in the Cases vs Tests (per capita) plane Somebody (in)famously said that the more you test, the more cases you find, so more cases found while increasing testing would not indicate a worse spread of the virus. pic.twitter.com/D2TkPAYcan

And this situation is hardly going to change. @HLGatell along with Mexican authorities say testing is not useful to fight against Covid-19, that there is not sufficient evidence of this. Outrageous, right?

Ironic. Trump claims the more you test, the more cases you find, yet clearly, places that test more have fewer cases than places that test very little. #COVID19

Mexico is only testing people with symptoms so of course the positive rate is higher then testing more.

The govmt policy is to test in order to confirm (rather than establish) a covid diagnostic. That's why "confirmed cases" is a meaningless figure in MX. It measures (limited) testing capacity, not number of cases.
