Just under 12,000 people (11,719) died from natural disasters in 2019. This was quite a low mortality year – mainly because there were no massive earthquakes. Average over the past decade is approx. 60,000 per year:

  4. Very happy that our reach is increasing! 2 million visited in January. For context:
 • That's 1/67th of the monthly online readership of the New York Times. • And 16-times more than the number of World Development Report downloads in its best month.

  5. The short post only includes one key figure showing the data on cancer mortality. You can explore it for all countries or regions in the world. Here is how cancer mortality in Brazil, the US, and Italy has changed.

  6. For tomorrow’s I ask whether the world is making progress against cancer. Deaths from cancer increased. Mostly because of population growth; the rate increased only a quarter as much. Adjusted for aging the death rate declined.

"You just have to Google smartphone addiction and you’d be convinced that it is a thing, even though it is not a psychiatrically recognised disorder. To talk about smartphones affecting the brain is a really slippery slope"

Key question that came up was: can we look at this in terms of grams or protein or calories? I pulled together all the data in our article here: You find land use, GHG emissions, water use and eutrophication by kg, 100g protein, & 1000kcals. 2/

In trying to reduce the impact of our diets, we tend massively to over-emphasise , and under-emphasise the type of food we eat. Even if you shipped bananas 6 times round the planet, their impact would be lower than local beef and lamb.

It is unfortunately in line with one of my main worries about development. As the majority of the world now lives in places where living conditions improve, there is a gap opening up with the very poorest who live in places that don’t make progress.

For decades the world was making progress against undernourishment. This has ended and hunger is on the rise. A good report by the FAO on a very bad development

Which publication by an international organization reaches most people? The World Development Report had close to 880,000 downloads so far(). Is there another report with a wider reach?

As a kid, whenever I was scared of some rare and horrible cause of death, my dad would say: "Don't be afraid of that. Be afraid of cars." He was right.

Recently came across this fascinating, valuable visualization. Such data represents so much more than one might assume, and reveals monstrous facts. Highly recommend reading the whole article as well: Thanks &

We just published a commentary in . To read my own publication I have to pay $30 for 24h access. We tried accessing it via Wits University, Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL without success. If someone has access to it I'd be grateful if you could share it with me.
