I once scoffed at claims of “white male privilege,” dismissing such criticisms as mere “political correctness.” But in the Trump era I have had my consciousness raised. Seriously. Me in @ForeignPolicy:http://atfp.co/2pKGWvJ

it took the credibility, or lack of, of one white man to convince you of something that MILLIONS of black people have been telling us for decades and we are supposed to applaud you?

I believe people would be more willing to accept that groups of people are treated worse than others if the term were changed from "white privilege" to "white advantage". What people really want is to be treated equally, not for white people to lose a "privilege".

Also, a lot of people equate privilege with financial status.

Exactly. The connotation for "privilege" is someone living an extravagant lifestyle. That's not the basis for the idea that PoC are trying to get white people to understand. The term "privilege" seemed to gain popularity without consideration if it was the best term to use.

When I first heard the term, I was indignant! "I'm not rich!" but then I understood: I've never been denied employment, lodging or any services of any kind due to my race. 'Advantage' does seem like a better term.

It's a simple concept that many (myself included for many years) instantly reject because of what the word implies in our minds. I now use 'advantage' whenever I explain it to someone and they usually get it pretty quickly since they are not on the defensive due to the term.

For me it was hearing @Toure explain "the talk" after Trayvon Martin was murdered. I'd raised 3 white boys and it never occurred to me how different sending them into the world was. It broke my heart but opened my eyes.

You say “rich privilege,” no one bats an eye. No one thinks you mean wealthy people can’t feel pain or have obstacles. They understand—take for granted—that resources mean your problems are not compounded. They just balk at the idea that whiteness has the status of a resource.

You make a great point that also speaks to another problem. Some people mistakenly believe the term 'white privilege' means something akin to 'rich privilege.' They argue that they were never wealthy, had to work for all that they have, etc., missing the true meaning altogether.

Agreed. Essentially equating “privilege” with “privileged.” Historically, it has always been better to be poor white than poor black. Poor male than poor female. Poor native than poor immigrant. The same way it is better to be rich any of these than poor any of these. Resources.
