Every child is a scientist by nature! Children lose their inborn curiosity as they grow up. The important thing is to keep asking questions, keep learning - and doing - new things.

Many probabilistic theories are this way. Complicated stochastic 'pieces' taken together in a kind of continuum limit yield simple aggregate dynamics. The base postulates are relatively complicated whereas the aggregate dynamics are simple enough to write out in compact formulae.

Complicated theories are usually built up of simpler parts. Occasionally simple theories derive from simple parts. Very rarely do complicated parts yield simple theories - this is what interests me. Parts which are complicated, but which when taken together yield simple theories.

Optimal Control Theory (which I studied ~7 years ago) all the sudden comes back into my studies in an important way, and I’ve found I’ve forgotten a lot of the basics. This happens a lot... Isn’t an inefficient way to make progress on problems.

I know it isn't measuring the same thing, but still the difference between the prediction markets and the poll numbers for Iowa are fascinating.

Yesterday I gave 4-hour master class at Caltech on quantum integrable systems. It was a tribute to Richard Feynman whose office was next door. In fact, on his last blackboard it was written “TO LEARN: Bethe Ansatz Problems” which was the subject I was talking about!

A trivial computation: If IQ mapped to intelligence rather than unintelligence (i.e. <70), where are the 800,000 geniuses? Trivial.

Condensed matter physics is so cool! Bounce 4 laser beams off mirrors to make an interference pattern with 8-fold symmetry. Put a Bose-Einstein condensate of potassium atoms into this "optical lattice" and you get a SUPERFLUID CRYSTAL! But that's not all... (1/n)

(1/3) I've learned an enormous amount from in the last 4 or 5 years about what it means to pursue math away from academia. It isn't simply a matter of depth of knowledge, though, it is his fearlessness with doing math in public and his ability to explain deep +.

The telegrapher process (finite speed of propagation) is unique among stochastic processes, as its quadratic variation has a non-zero second order differential in time (e.g. dt^2 doesn’t go to zero), giving its continuum limit a wavelike characteristic. Has a unique Itô table.

Example of a possible f(a) would be something like tanh(a) and tanh(a)^2 which when ‘a’ goes to -infinity is -1 and 1 respectively. What then would be a suitable ‘b’?

    lim (f(a) + b) = 1, lim (f(a) + b)^2 = 0. What can f and b be, if the limit is taken w.r.t. ‘a’, each going to the same value?
