87k likes for this bit of totalitarian bullshit. Imagine for a moment that this was a Polish government supporter referring to LGBTQ advocates. Or a MAGA activist about migrants rights campaigners. As it could easily be.https://twitter.com/Phillipasoo/status/1280890450778501120 …

Cancel culture: If you are “cancelled” but do not wish to be, you must WORK to EARN back people’s respect by owning up to the thing that cancelled you in the first place, LISTENING to others, EDUCATING yourself, and ADVOCATING on behalf of the people that you have offended/harmed

The most disingenuous line is that ‘cancel’ just means ‘criticise’ or ‘hold accountable’. No: it means what it says - to cancel, to abolish, to vaporise. Amazing language to be used by people who speak so often of sensitivity and safety.

Not disagreeing with the definition, but is there a good example of people’s opinions being vaporised or cancelled? I can’t immediately think of one yet keep hearing about a cancel culture that apparently exists

Except the PEOPLE are not literally cancelled. Their presence on a particular platform is. Freedom of speech gives you the right to not be executed for your opinions. It does not give you the right to a Twitter account.

@Twitter should change it from ‘like’, with a silly heart, to something more grown-up, like ‘noted’ or ‘marked’. Words matter, especially those which convey approval.

Many women have been removed from Twitter because of their views on sex and gender. Universities have cancelled lectures by female academics because of perceived offence.

I always think of Danny Baker's immediate sacking by the BBC, because some thought one ill-judged tweet made him an unremitting white-supremacist. No room for explanation. Gone.

"Cancel" means "vaporise"? I vaporised my dinner reservation? The problem here is that while you're both extremely bad at your jobs, you *are* journalists, and you do *know* what you're doing. And what you're doing is absolutely despicable. And yet you still have jobs?

Obviously Drugstore Culture went south. Is that why you're so angry, Matthew? It was "vaporised" because it was a load of toss. Sorry mate
