Meet Bry. She’s a teenager, a wizard, a survivor, a healer, and she’s trans. Art by and I’m super happy with it.

The West End Star Wars game, Torg, Champions, Dark*Matter/Alternity, Exalted, Mage, Mutants and Masterminds, GURPS, WOTC Star Wars D20, and Rifts at least. Maybe more.

Okay, so far I'm really enjoying Cyberpunk 2077, and moreover, it feels a LOT like the way Cyberpunk 2020 felt to play back in the day. It's intensely "What if D&D but William Gibson wrote it" and I'm here for it.

I mean, okay, Godzilla vs Kong, but I was really more interested in Pacific Rim vs Godzilla

My coworker, 35 yrs old, athletic, no pre-existing conditions, just died of COVID after 10 wks in the ICU. Stop pretending it can’t happen to you. It can. Wear your damn mask, wash your hands and get vaccinated.

It's really weird to play Cyberpunk 2077 months later and realize it's actually really good. It's a shame it launched with so many game breaking bugs on last gen consoles because it's a lot of fun and I have enjoyed the past six hours of it.

Player deaths can and do happen, depending on the game, and they aren't always bad. But the idea that the person running the game should be deliberately using them to create an inflated sense of danger seems lazy to me. It's "Fuck it, rocks fall" and it feels cheap to me.

If your party loses a fight with the big bad, they don't have to kill them for them to have failed. Did they get away with the MacGuffin? Will the party now have to try and figure out a way to stop their plan? What about the collateral damage?

This goes for TTRPG spaces as well. If you are running a game, it isn't your job to kill players. If anything, you'll have to work very hard NOT to kill them. It's your job to give them potential failure states that may INCLUDE player death, but do not stop there.

One BlizzCon I got to see talk about her work designing encounters for World of Warcraft, and she made a point that's stuck with me. Paraphrasing, she argued that it wasn't her job to kill players, but to give them a plausible feeling of that.

On the subject of 'danger' in spaces, I think killing the party is lazy DMing. It's easy to kill the players. You always have the home field advantage. In fact, I'd go so far to say that, in many cases, a player death means you've failed as a game master.
