Perhaps I'm wrong, but suspect that there was no video game culture as we know it before 2003, when 4chan & Call of Duty appeared.
That allowed otherwise asocial, game-obsessed oddballs to be in constant contact with each other. That's why all this weeaboo, incel, and at first 'ironic' Nazi shit is connected with 'gamers'.

Before that, it was just gaming systems that most people played with their friends in real life spaces, although some loners became overly obsessed with them.

Even earlier were the arcades, which were ancillary to real world activities like hanging out with friends, partying, & dating. So they didn't really foster a distinct culture that people centered their identity on.

The reality is that 'gamer' culture as conceived today is defined by its most immature, disturbed, socially inept members. Prior to 2003, there were no 'gamers' as such, just different kinds of people who happened to play video games.
