Wizard of Oz is great but I think movies from the 30's, 40's, and 50's too often get credit just for being old. If that movie came out for the first time in 2019, it would be seen as a cute little film with corny dialogue and bad acting. Nobody would call it a cinematic classic.https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1138895160094445570 …

The writing and acting in movies today (not every movie, but generally speaking) is just much more sophisticated and impressive than the stuff from 60 or 70 years ago. Every month a film gets dumped on Netflix that would be seen as an all time classic had it been released in 1942

I think that's why our culture isn't producing great novelists anymore. Most of the great storytellers are telling their stories through film. Vince Gilligan would have written something like Crime and Punishment had he been born in the 19th century. Instead he made Breaking Bad.

It seems like the 70's is when you start to see movies that actually stack up, in terms of writing and acting, against films of today. I think The Godfather (1&2, I see them as one film) is the best movie of all time. The acting and writing is phenomenal even by today's standards

All old movies have annoying accents as if there is an old time accent from 50 years ago.

That’s not surprising. Beauty, truth, and excellence go unrecognized, even rejected, by most people today.

History completely disagrees with you Matt. Wiz is a classic because people still love it....it is historic because it was the first color movie...it is a great musical (you know every song...admit it)

You understand that the cinematography, directing, and acting in movies like the Wizard of Oz laid the groundwork and inspiration for countless films that came after right? This would be like saying Elvis or the Beatles are not as good as modern rock.
