No, it's not disqualifying. If we call it disqualifying then the Democrats will simply ask every nominee from here on out the most embarrassing, weird, and irrelevant personal questions, and if the nominee isn't willing to be humiliated publicly, he is thus "disqualified." https://twitter.com/Jamie_Weinstein/status/1046046042981126144 …

Suddenly the litmus test for the Supreme Court is a person's willingness to be humiliated on national television. I don't want to go that route. If he fibbed on "Devil's Triangle," he'll have to apologize to God about that. But it doesn't matter in the grand scheme.

If I was traipsed in front of the Senate on bogus charges and forced to answer deeply personal and embarrassing questions about my high school antics, maybe out of embarrassment and anger I might be less than truthful. Would that make me a liar who can't be trusted again? Come on

People are intentionally misconstruing the above tweet. Yes, in this scenario it would make me a liar about that specific thing. But the next part of that same sentence is "WHO CAN'T BE TRUSTED AGAIN." The question is whether a lie about boofing makes a guy eternally unreliable

As for that, the obvious answer is "no." So, no, I don't think the Democrats can disqualify someone from the Supreme Court by berating them over personal and irrelevant details until they lie about something. I think that's crazy.

And I don't concede that Kavanaugh did lie. I'm just discussing the hypothetical. I think it's personally reasonable to assume that he misremembered or that these slang terms had different meanings back then.

The line of questioning was based on Kavanaugh's own writings from his calendar and yearbook - not exactly bogus stuff brought out just to embarrass him. Keep moving the goalposts back, Matt...

Do you even understand the meaning and solemn seriousness of being “under oath”? It is not something to be mitigated by things like “I was uncomfortable”. It is an absolute.

It's not irrelevant. He was credibly accused of drunken assault as a teenager. A fact pattern of drunken misogyny couldn't be more relevant. And he lied about it.

So lying under oath is okay if it’s embarrassing to admit?
