"For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake." - Frederick Douglass, 1852

Not to mention paragraphing. 🤦🏾‍♂️ Shoot, I wish it was all as easy as “Sometimes people who are smart in some ways also have racist ideas, and sometimes they give these ideas the wheel. Sometimes these ideas combine to make systems. Those systems suck. Got it? Cool.”

Anti-CRT bots sell their own kids thinking ability so short. A founding father can have + ideas about government & still be an objectively awful human because they enslaved people. That’s not at all tough for kids to process. Not the hardest thing we teach by a country mile!

Through the years people would ask me why I didn’t teach at an HBCU and I’d say because no HBCU ever asked me. Thank you for asking. So happy to be part of The Mecca.

This is low key a nice document to tuck away for a unit that engages the 1st Amendment. I’m gonna make a slideshow. Which points make sense? Which hold no water? Why?

I’ve been thinking about this — the idea that internet companies have “more power than governments” is so blatantly untrue and yet such an effective fundraising vehicle.

To create that "safe space," shares three discussion guidelines (and activities) in ch 1 of NOT LIGHT, BUT FIRE that should really help make that "safe space" not so elusive and magical.

My kid’s happy birthday balloon is eerily American Beauty-ing around me as I sit here and write. Not enough helium to go down. Not enough to go up. Feels prescient re: my writing at the moment 😬

As powerful as the words are - and they are utter genius - the context under which Douglass generally spoke is what should humble us. It wasn’t just abolitionist societies. It was being regularly met with brickbats, stones, fists, bullets. And then doing it again. And again.
