Agreed. They should learn that the only failed experiment is the one that is inconclusive. So much biological research today seem to be driven by delivering what the boss wants......
-
Not even then. Inconclusive experiments, if conducted to the best of current knowledge, techniques, and researcher abilities, can provide a lot of information too. Thinking all non-failed experiments will be conclusive is confirmation bias ;)

But also an environment where supervisors are held responsible for their labs. I just can't understand how someone who presides over a lab with 60 problematic papers could be completely without blame. If you want the credit, you take the responsibility

I totally agree. I wasn’t blaming the researchers, just commenting on research culture. Ultimately the PI is responsible for the group and all the outputs. I’m interested in the answer not the journal.

Agreed. This is why I really respect my advisor. Very early on she called a meeting with the lab and said,"if you ever make a mistake, just tell me, I won't be mad". I remember thinking, wow, I have never heard a PI say that before, but I was glad she did!

Experiments fail all the time... it’s critical to the process... there is a difference between failure and mistakes.

Odd that no other names were named. If these allegedly fraudulent results only came from one section of his lab over twenty years it suggests one individual rather than a series of very poor choices.
