students from underserved areas both RURAL and URBAN are those most likely to return to those communities and help provide care to those areas. Unfortunately these students are more likely to be left behind due to costs, resources and physical distance.

It’s debatable how much university systems are “helping” rural portions of their respective states. University systems are ranked on research and highly specialized care. Recruitment and development of students most likely to return to rural areas is almost never a stated goal

Final thoughts: This is a hugely important issue. Let's keep having the conversation -- and be sure our physician leaders amplify it. It has to be improved.

+1 Can (and should) be asked of higher education in general. Many go into med school with an already significant debt burden. And many potential good docs avoid med school for fear of the debt burden.

If so -- it could seriously impact how different physician groups recruit. Could also impact the type of equity physicians are offered in groups.

T3 Med school tuition should be less! No one should feel forced to take a job based solely on salary because of student debt burden.
