Like, the point of the Madisonian republic is "it's really hard to gather the votes," not "you should base your vote on whether lots of votes have been gathered."

And I like the Madisonian republic---this isn't a knock on it at all! But this meta-Madisonian belief that consensus is the prerequisite rather than the outcome, and that conflict is the enemy of politics needs to be buried. Conflict is good!

"You shouldn't fight like hell for what you want, because that would offend the madisonian system of consensus" is among the dumbest things you can say.

Don’t blame this on Madison.

Reread my tweet---I'm not! I actually like the Madisonian republic. I just don't like people pretending it's something it's not.

There is an absolute good in trying to make changes palatable to people in both parties. Your point about this not being the right bill, underscores that this is not that.
-
The GOP literally wants to restrict who can vote, and they want the flow of dark money to continue, so they don’t have a good faith opposition to anything in S.1.

Do you think Manchin really has an allegiance to that view or is just pretending to hold that view because it justifies his position, which he arrives at based in personal policy preferences and/or political expedience?
-
The latter. It's a rhetorical move that preys on idiots who actually believe it.

I don't think he has any such ideological allegiance. His strategy is purely political; his bipartisanship schtick helps him get crossover R voters, and the filibuster lets him avoid unpopular votes. Manchin doesn't care about anything else
