Everyone on this website is certain about everything, until you try to get 20-1 from them on a bet about it.

House Freedom Caucus moves from fringe GOP group to multiple committee leadership positions. The party’s extreme right shift shows no signs of stopping.

Seriously what the hell is going on? I could drive around Iowa and hand pick up the remaining precinct results and bring them back to Des Moines.

  5. This presser is the essence of Trump, in every way.

So the idea here is Romney spent a lifetime in conservative politics as a secret agent so he could throw the 2012 election to the Dems, and then he tried to infiltrate the Trump administration but they were too smart, and now everyone knows the truth because he voted to convict?

Folks, you can’t drag Romney and say stuff like he “did the bare minimum” when he did something that no other politician in the history of the country has done.

And here’s a nice Jacobson article on the decline and the causes.

Here’s Gary Jacobson’s chart of incumbency advantage disappearing, from 2016. By 2018, he had pronounced it effectively dead.

You still see some personal brands that overcome partisan disadvantages—Manchin has one, Tester arguably, Collin Peterson in MN. But the days of most members running 10+ points ahead of their standard bearer are just history.

Yup. 30 years ago, most members ran way ahead of their parties’ POTUS candidate in their state/district, giving them a personal brand, and insulation in a primary. Those days are gone, leaving most members much more tied to party’s fate, and with little cushion if they buck it.

I was wondering why POTUS hadn’t taken to Twitter to call Romney a loser yet, and it appears the answer is that he was digging out his copy of the Dazed and Confused soundtrack so he could put some Nazareth under clips of his speech from last night.

If you want allies, you have to work at cultivating them. And that means not being a sullen jerk when someone works with you on an issue.

In my experience, this attitude is traditionally much more prevalent on the activist/electoral side of things, where things are (and are seen) as much more zero-sum. Inside the legislatures, people are much more likely to value moderates from other side when they cross over.

This is one of the most destructive attitudes in politics, but you see it over and over again. The last thing you want to do is alienate the people on the other side of the aisle most likely to ally with you.

And perhaps most importantly, he represents a segment of Republicans who are (and always have been) *very* lukewarm on Trump. There's an element of this that is probably a conscience vote. But remember that Romney is ideally insulated institutionally, making conscience easier.

I get a lot wrong, but I'm feeling pretty good about these right now. Good for you, Mitt.
