Bored shitless of arguments for the validity of Lovecraft’s influence. You could erase him from history and folks still would’ve written tentacle space monster fic. Including authors who suddenly didn’t feel excluded from the convo. And the fic would’ve been better for it.

Ditto Campbell. “Whatever his flaws, his magazine was the most popular and influential.” Yeah, that was never a good thing, scooter. His influence sucked. It was limiting to the form and exclusionary to authors. It set shitty precedents that are still hurting the field.

Their influence didn’t lead to better work. Authors who came after made lemonade out of their bullshit. Authors who shouldn’t have had to. They overcame Lovecraft and Campbell. Stop assigning these clowns credit for being inspirations. They were albatrosses. Big racist ones.

Hm. I think it’s possible to say that someone was a great artist in the technical sense with great influence and a crappy person with crappy politics. (I do not disagree that Campbell’s influence was not good, but he was an editor/publisher).

And yet the SF genre was totally reshaped by his editorship, and if one looks at the transformation of SF from its pulp origins into a discussion of how technology will affect the human condition. Another man with feet of clay, but here we are talking about him.
