We welcome this new report from , especially the strong call for patient & public involvement in decisions about how NHS data is used 👇 Look out for our research out soon, where we asked the public what they think.

Highlight of this report for me is this figure, showing just how fragmented the health record landscape is in the NHS in England. This is why standardisation/interoperability work is *crucial*. There is no such thing as an "NHS dataset".

I like the flight analogy for models like , but draw a very different conclusion. Imagine humans can't fly, and someone invented a hot air balloon. Now, you haven't solved long distance travel, but this simple tool can still do a lot. 1/10

“In the beginning, no one could really imagine how such complex systems like ‘AI symptom checkers’ could be benchmarked.” Head over to Ada Editorial for the latest on progress.

1/2 My book disagrees, rather extends. You need clinical effectiveness and engineering dependability, of which we have none at the present. Buy an ambulance, you assume it's safe, low emissions, passes MOT *then* you decide how good it is for the NHS. You can't assume for digital

The risks of undertriage are clear, but it's interesting that CQC advises NHSE to take risks of overtriage seriously, including anxiety being caused to users/patients. Trust in these tools can only be achieved if a balance is struck between safety and risk aversion. /ends

A lot of what the CQC says "good looks like" can be achieved by thoughtful delivery of MDR requirements. We don't need to reinvent the wheel to keep patients safe with novel technologies; let's learn from other industries that have been keeping patients safe for decades. /4

There's a call for a "fair test of clinical performance", based on a central, 'secret' "curated dataset of real patient histories". How do you define performance? What metrics, what thresholds? This is a complex issue that projects like in / are grappling with. /3

The report is completely in keeping with 's drive for standardisation of procurement for the NHS. Having transparent quality, safety and performance standards for the use of these tools by NHS organisations would be welcome. /2

I've finally had the opportunity to read 's report with recommendations for regulation of digital triage. A summary is below, but a few points in particular struck me. /1

Being covered by Analysis means issues around healthcare data are breaking out of /data policy bubbles and into the mainstream (of sorts)... Looking forward to this. (HT )

Talking of exit, today is my last day as Executive Director of after 8 years in post. It's been a blast. Statisticians and data scientists are wonderful people to work with. Some highlights from my time to follow. 1/N
