Periodic Reminder: When debugging, you must first accept that something you believe is true is not true. If everything you believed about this system were true, it would work. It doesn't, so you're wrong about something. This is a surprisingly common stumbling block for devs.

If artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and blockchains have taught us anything, it's that no matter what fundamental innovation in computer science comes next, IBM will pretend to be good at it.

Here's your periodic reminder that basic research is only "useless" until it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the world. 20 years ago, coronavirology was an obscure sub-field the public never heard about. Good thing we funded it anyway.

libgen/scihub are of such monumental social/moral worth that their illegality delegitimizes the law as a whole

In 6 years of hearing pitches in Silicon Valley, I heard '5G' maybe once. That's not from ignorance - the utility network layer is not very important to innovation at the top of the stack.

Any organization that organized itself not around function or revenue/reporting unit, but along the boundaries of "what time-box of development are we effective at running experiments at?" would utterly destroy its competition. Oh wait, that's Amazon.

Paraphrasing Tyson, everyone has a plan for their future children until they get punched in the face... er, transition from theoretical to actual child.

Some people really benefit from hearing advice that everyone knows, for the same reason we keep schools open despite every subject in them having been taught before. In that spirit, here's some quick Things Many People Find Too Obvious To Have Told You Already.

On the plus side, this is confirmation that bandwidth is more a limiting reagent than money is, and therefore bandwidth should command a higher price.

Honest inquiry rarely leads to “just do a nice normal thing that you probably felt like you ought to do before but you never got around to.”

And then set up a bunch of stuff that looks like it was configured by a moron, but you had to compensate for some obscure problem nobody but you will understand, and that way you’ll teach the next generation to think you’re an idiot while they learn valuable professional skills.

What can we learn from pilots and plane crashes? ✈️ ☎️ Most are caused by communication errors 🎰 Most don’t start as catastrophic, but instead are on average 7 small mistakes that compound ⚔️ Copilots let their senior pilot crash the plane 25% of the time

I am rather uncomfortable with the attempt to recast ‘you search for X therefore you’re interested in X’ as ‘surveillance’. That seems to me to devalue and diminish what actual secret police and oppressive states do

THREAD: I wonder how much of our social issues are caused, at the root, by a growing (is it growing or just more visible now?) inability to handle negative emotions. We draw cultural boundaries around 'acceptable pain' and 'unacceptable pain.' Acceptable pain is stuff like

One of the most effective things a government can do to foster an ecosystem of AI startups is to have a National Open Data Strategy. Put all government data behind APIs, sponsor the creation of high-quality public datasets in various domains relevant to local markets & language.
