A key problem is that the education of teachers does not resemble the education of doctors. Even at the most prestigious schools of education, teachers-in-training are held to far lower standards of performance and mastery than those demanded of medical students everywhere.
To build a great teacher requires considerable infrastructure; it is not unlike building a jet fighter. We build no great teachers, because we lack the required infrastructure; when they arise, they arise by happy accident, and not by design. They are merely marvelous flukes.
