Just gonna put this out there: if my parents hadn't been able to afford an SAT tutor to help me with math, there's no way my scores would have been good enough for me to get into Yale. And that's without "cheating" the system. That's just being born into a certain family/class.https://twitter.com/deray/status/992080782809354245 …

Not to mention every other kind of privilege that got me there. A dad who helped create an organizational system for my college applications. Parents who could & did pay for private school. Parents who read to me & brought me to the library & bought me books for every birthday.

Yeah, I was smart. Yeah, I had "aptitude." So are & do a million other kids. I also had the benefit of small classrooms, where a teacher could notice that I was smart & had the freedom to give me more challenging material. Our U.S. education system is deeply unfair & classist.

Our US educational "system" is in fact dysfunctional, in an impressively comprehensive sense. Deeply unfair and classist doesn't even begin to cover it. Children born to highly educated parents learn more from them than from the schools. This largely accounts for the inequities.

If you have yet to ponder the implications of the work of Hart and Risley, you may find this impressive: http://theatln.tc/2xsKfbn  The inequities affecting educational outcomes are profound, and rooted in early childhood experience. Have you heard of Geoffrey Canada, and the HCZ?
