Of course lectures still dominate. To do anything other than lecture takes imagination and effort, and most academics have compelling reasons to devote those resources to other ends. It's also hard to do well what you have never yourself seen done well.

Absolutely: this is exactly what I sought to convey through my earlier remark. Incentives and pressures push in the direction of lecturing, and even in the direction of lecturing poorly. Other things matter more than teaching. Much more, in fact.
