Perhaps the film aims to shock and alarm us by envisioning a future that exaggerates intolerably our own contemporary misogyny?

If so, then 2049 seems to me no worse than, say, THE HANDMAID'S TALE. There are many ways to be deeply disturbing, some of them legitimate.

Of course the question remains whether one wants to be deeply disturbing, even if one's purpose is legitimate. Collateral damage may occur.
