To say that everyone must have a working knowledge of math is clearly hyperbolic. Vast numbers of successful persons lack this knowledge.

The fully defensible statement is that ignorance of math diminishes and impoverishes the human spirit. As does ignorance of all other arts

No, but everyone needs to know the basics of writing. And reading. And drawing. And math. They are all forms of communication.

People tend to decide for themselves what they need to know. Attempts to teach them things that they find dull and profitless tend to fail.
