Oh, yes. I do not blame you personally. Not at all. But we are outliers. Very few mathematicians think about pedagogy and public outreach.

Indeed, what we have here is a tragedy of the commons. Mathematicians imagine that these jobs can be left to others, And behold the result.

Do you think we might encourage greater participation in these vital projects by pointing out research like this?http://bit.ly/1X1QmZy

I won't deny that the conclusions here astounded me. Fidelity of transmission of cultural assets matters vastly more than new contributions.

Inspired teaching, and effective outreach, may do more to advance mathematics than even tremendous breakthroughs (like, e.g., Mochizuki's.)

Shouldn't evidence to this effect confer greater respectability, and even glamour, to those who devote themselves to pedagogy and outreach?

There is a broad grassroots movement here on twitter and championed by
@joboaler to change the face of math ed.Keep fighting the good fight!1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
Alas, broad grassroots movements here on Twitter are not going to solve the problem. More first-rate mathematicians must care intensely.

That's interesting. I didn't think that first-rate mathematicians controlled the direction of math education.

Who controls music education? No one. But let's look at who became seriously involved there: Schumann. Bartok. Prokofiev. Kodaly.

Many great musicians have taken the musical education of young persons seriously. Not true of great mathematicians. It makes a difference.
