Taught 8 yo about F = ma by showing how a soccer player could run faster if he lost weight. That really brought it home.

Newton's laws are tremendously subtle. Took me nearly a decade to realize that they're misnumbered: the second and third should be switched.

And the first law really is absolutely essential and conceptually primitive -- without it, the second and third laws would be meaningless.

One must know how to distinguish "straight" lines from all other curves determined by any two (infinitesimally) nearby constituent points.

And this isn't easy. Indeed, ideally adapted means for doing this didn't become available until fairly recently -- amazingly enough.
