When teaching kids I avoid memorization. E.g. my 7 yo knows lots of tricks for mental arithmetic, but doesn't "know his times tables."

What's important is that your son should enjoy thinking about arithmetic enough to discover and formulate (lots of) his own tricks.

Mastery results from time on task, which requires intense interest. The key thing is to engender and sustain that interest.
