By the way, I absolutely loved THE HELP, and would watch Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain read the phone book to each other.
@EvelynYves Thank you for your contribution to Aaron Sorkin's masterclass. I am a great admirer, and I look forward eagerly to THE MERC.

My main reason for asking about these female-driven stories is that I couldn't help noticing how testosterone-rich THE MERC is.

Thank you very much for these thoughtful and illuminating replies. I completely agree, and I too read screenplays constantly.

Do you have any all-time favorite screenplays? Works to which you return again and again, and whose mastery always astounds?

Again, Ms. Yves, thank you very much. This is most helpful. I too worship Sorkin, and only wish he would write more rom-coms.

Because he's so damn good at it. I, like countless other men, have never gotten over Amelia Gardner, and probably never will.

I love BARTON FINK, which, like THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, seems to me perversely undervalued. FARGO, too, is amazing, of course.

Forgive me for continuing to pester you with questions, but what about, say, ATONEMENT, AN EDUCATION, or BROOKLYN?

I wonder whether you feel you understand men well enough to make your male characters completely convincing, even in the breach.

We're mostly WYSIWYG, of course. But there are some pretty surprising subtleties, too, and they can show up in strange places.
