When I was a teaching assistant in graduate school, helping with a freshman calculus course, the lead professor — Raoul Bott — wanted a suggestion for a good applied question for an exam. He said, “let’s ask Tom Lehrer” and I could barely believe my ears!

It’s funny because I’ve never heard of Lehrer, but I really perked up when you said your lead was Bott.

Right :-). Bott was wonderful. So was John Tate. It was fun to work with those giants.

Bott was truly a giant -- and it's not widely enough known that his doctoral work was in electrical engineering; his dissertation was entitled "Electrical Network Theory." Another great master with similar beginnings was Paul Dirac; pure luck kept him from an engineering career.

And as for Tate, well. It's probably impossible to exaggerate the significance of his doctoral dissertation!
