It's a symptom of inculcated alienation from and antipathy toward mathematics, whose victims are too numerous to feel any real embarrassment at their incapacity. The habit of thinking mathematically, and the joy and value thereof, now belong only to a tiny elite. It's like Latin.

The trouble, though, is that mathematics matters more than Latin; being alienated from mathematics, and being incapable of its characteristic way of thinking, means being excluded from the many of the most consequential parts of contemporary human activity. It's the new serfdom.
