I don't like any part of the film—to me, it's ersatz screwball.

Perfectly understandable. I think, BTW, that "Blood Simple" is a bit of both. There is genuine feeling in McDormand's character—and pure nihilism in Walsh's character. As such, it's a template for all their later work.

Zhang Yimou did a remake of Blood Simple that was released (barely) in the US as 'A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop'. It has its charms, and was a modest commercial success in China but it's certainly an odd duck.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_J6r9WFDpU …
