Well, my conclusion is that you're really objecting to Babs herself, rather than to ersatz screwball. Because, strictly speaking, "Raising Arizona" is just as ersatz as "What's Up, Doc?" The difference (which I agree is profound) is that the Coen brothers are geniuses.

No, both. There's nothing ersatz about the Coens, or that film in particular: it is itself. Not so "What's Up, Doc?" It's a painfully self-conscious hommage, and I think I'd dislike it even if Streisand weren't in it.

In a sense, it's what I imagine a Tarantino screwball comedy would be like -- a film that's untimately all about other films in a hall of film nerd mirrors that isn't half as clever as it thinks it is. I also have no idea how you make Cole Porter dull & ugly but Bogdanovich did.
