Mathematical physicist and mentor to mathematically talented youth. Talent is that which bridges the gap between what can be taught and what must be learned.

In the next series of tweets, I’ll show you just how much thinking is expected from students. I love how conceptual and interesting these textbooks are. And this is for fifth grade!pic.twitter.com/cdj4NluA3J
Notice they are suggesting different ways to solve the same problem. Just like real mathematicians dopic.twitter.com/4AnHNI8sy2

Some serious creativity and thinking is expected of students. Why not! Come on America, wake up.pic.twitter.com/adS6frOIhP
The culture of the American classroom is utterly unlike that cultivated by the best Japanese elementary mathematics teachers. The expectations of students and teachers here, and the constraints that bind them, are wildly different. See also the work of James Stigler.
There is absolutely no substitute for actual observation of Japan's best elementary mathematics pedagogues in action. They are dazzlingly brilliant, without calling attention to themselves. The focus remains constantly on student mathematical activity. But it is artfully managed.
For whatever it's worth, my own take is that the greatest Japanese pedagogue of elementary mathematics now in the classroom is Takii Akira. It is hard to exaggerate how skilled he is. Watching him work is not unlike watching Roger Federer play tennis. Breathtaking.
Most people, alas, have never seen, and will never see, anything like it. Great classroom teaching is rare, and opportunities to observe it even rarer; this should change. Of course just observing isn't enough; you can't become a magician just by watching shows. But it's a start.
Any links to videos of him in action? This seems interesting
