What I particularly love about Japanese audiences - and I’m sure that every musician feels this - is that they come to the music with such rapt concentration that one can confide in them, rather than begin having to get their attention.

I lived in Japan for many years, and speak the language fluently. What most impresses me is the pronounced tendency of the Japanese to take serious things seriously; it's part of their deep-seated traditional reverence for the "shokunin," or "person wholly devoted to a craft."
