It took a long, long time before I understood that the ability to spell correctly is not a virtue but a genetic accident. (Discovering how badly Flannery O'Connor and F. Scott Fitzgerald spelled helped—a lot.)

I remember how astonished I was by the atrocities against English spelling routinely committed by F Scott Fitzgerald. They affected me profoundly, and much as they seem to have affected you. Seldom have I been so forcibly struck by the difference between correctness and genius.
