What ensures the survival of democracy is the universal recognition of its fragility, and a vivid appreciation of the repugnance and perils of all other forms of governance. Losers consent because they rightly fear the consequences of irreparably disrupting a delicate balance.

I'm baffled by the complaisance of those who think that our Republic can withstand any amount of ruthless internecine hostility, and flagrantly corrupt incompetence, in those we entrust with its governance. They exaggerate our strength, and grievously underestimate our enemies.
