I'm a big fan of Trautman... and I had the luck to have a conversation with him. So that sounds good. (I hadn't known Ehlers died! I've been out of the quantum gravity / GR scene for too long.)
I too met Trautman on several occasions, and found him extremely interesting and impressive -- an exceptionally elegant thinker, but never fussy or pedantic. His exposition of Newtonian gravity is a delight; it makes the Cartanian perspective seem the only natural one.
