I suspect superheroes will remain popular as long as faith that public institutions can solve humanity’s intractable problems remains queasily low.

I think the emergence of "prestige series" like Amazon Prime's "The Boys" and HBO's "Watchmen" suggest that the public's faith in superheroes is suffering a similarly queasy decline. Is the next step the glorification of quasi-psychotic, nihilisitic anti-heroes (e.g., "Joker"?)
