If you’re a GOP Senator who read the “transcript” that TRUMP released and decided to call it a “nothing burger” (@LindseyGrahamSC), because, really, how could it get any worse? … well, history is not going to judge you kindly.

The notion is simply preposterous that any career intelligence professional would file a whistleblower complaint against a sitting President without utterly compelling cause. No amount of partisan rancor could induce such a person to risk so much. It's guaranteed career suicide.

Nor is it at all likely that the filer of this complaint was naive or hasty in his or her assessment of the Presidential behavior that occasioned it. Career intelligence professionals are neither simpletons nor cowboys; they deal in hard data and meticulous assessments thereof.

So odds are excellent that this whistleblower complaint, which has already been judged both credible and of urgent concern by Trump's own ICIG, will prove out in fine-grained detail, and have shocking implications for national security. Anything less, and we wouldn't be here.

Which is why it is exceedingly strange to see veteran Republican senators wagering what remains of their careers and reputations on the assumption that this whistleblower complaint will turn out to be negligible. It's like drawing to an inside straight.
