Reflecting on the proposed Princess Bride remake, & thinking about how much luck is involved in making great movies. Blade Runner is a great movie without the "Tears in Rain" monologue, but much less so. And that was re-written by Rutger Hauer at the last minute. Talk about luck!

It is astonishing how often extraordinary things in great films are the result of improvisation. An example: Quint's monologue in JAWS, in which he describes how he survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, was almost entirely improvised by the late, great Robert Shaw.
