And the trouble is that expertise and empathy tend to be complementary variables, in the sense of Bohr and Heisenberg. The greater your expertise, the less your empathy. It is almost as though the product of the two magnitudes is some sort of absolute constant.

Yes, exactly. To succeed in conveying a novel idea, you must empathize with those to whom you hope to convey it. Their struggle must be yours, at least in imagination.
