One of my heroes, George Polya, was very keen on this point. To prove you must guess, and to guess well you must be good at using informal reasoning.

A still deeper point is that you cannot make a guess until you have developed the language needed for that purpose. A serious conjecture is a proud achievement -- the culmination of a long and subtle preliminary process of inarticulate gestation.
