Alas, the number of teachers of mathematics acquainted with the historical origins of the subject's fundamental ideas is extremely small, and destined to remain so. Very few students will learn these things in school (and even fewer will learn them outside of school.)

I believe you are mistaken, for the simple reason that almost no one learns this stuff in school. So by definition, more people learn about it outside school.
