Born otd 1914 Paul Tortelier, great French cellist (and composer and political figure). In England in my youth, he was as famous as Rostropovich - a striking, charismatic figure onstage, with a mastery and sense of musical drama that made his performances unforgettable.

His televised masterclasses in the 1970s were amazing. You'd hear a brilliant piece of playing from a young cellist and then he'd show them how it was really done ...

Masterclasses from great musicians are always fascinating. If you are as yet unacquainted with those of Jorge Bolet (on YouTube) focusing on the Rachmaninov Op. 30, I humbly propose that you may find them worth your attention. A great artist and a great pedagogue, at his best.
