In writing, there are some problems for which there's no good general rule (whether to write 3 or three, when to capitalize) and the only solution is sleight of hand.

I think it more accurate to say that no general rules apply meaningfully to writing that aspires to any merit subtler than bald clarity. When a writer aims not just to convey information but also to engender vivid aesthetic emotion, he had better study Blake than Strunk & White.
