The whole system of college admissions is broken. Even after decision-makers have imposed (unreasonably) stringent threshold SAT and GPA requirements, they're left with many thousands of applicants they cannot distinguish objectively. The choices they make then are arbitrary.

Certainly you're right to stress the unfairness that bedevils current practices (both those of applicants and of decision-makers.) It's indefensible and appalling. But universities are ultimately businesses; they choose their classes to maximize expected future alumni donations.

No shit. Colleges are businesses. I am constantly hounded for Alumni donation every two months. They use to call me in the evenings asking for money. I told them not to bother me with phone calls and now they just send me donation letter with their bullshit letter from the Dean

years. But, I am happy to see that Harvard and Yale are dropping in rankings as they are pivoting to social justice warrioring. :) That means my alma mater will pass them in 5 to 10 years.

All universities are already facing, and will continue to face, steadily growing pressures to justify the vast costs they impose, and in the long run it is very hard to see how they can do so. Universities simply do not add sufficient value, and cannot without radical remodeling.
