Today I learn that wealth can be used to access top universities for kids who can’t make it in academically. Tune in tomorrow when we learn academically irrelevant attributes (e.g. natural athletic ability) & distracting activities can also be used to compensate in similar ways.

The idea of “completely extraneous-bullshit-blind admissions” to prestigious universities is an idea so radical that I honestly don’t know if it has ever even been tried. Someone explain to me why someone with a body built for fast swimming deserves a special path to education.

The Japanese have relied on "completely extraneous-bullshit-blind admissions" for decades now. To gain admission to the most prestigious Japanese universities, you must pass an (extremely demanding) entrance exam. Those who pass, get in; those who don't, don't. Period.

Medical school is a professional school, and a graduate program; I was speaking of undergraduate admissions. But I have no doubt that in Japan gender discrimination in the professions (and in training for them) is real, and extremely intransigent -- indeed even institutionalized.
