Love this local angle on my story about the dearth of black mathematicians by @uflorida student journalist @kellyrhayes! Meet Melissa Shabazz, the only African American out of 58 faculty in the UF math department.https://twitter.com/TheAlligator/status/1100090311576092672 …

Also love that she got this quote from the department chair, @niveknosdunk, which addresses a point I didn't get to:“People think mathematics is very rigid, and it is. But different points of view will certainly lead to solutions that you might not have been able to find before.”

Lots of people, including Chief Justice Roberts, have asked why diversity matters in 'objective' disciplines like science/math. ("What unique perspective does a minority student bring to a physics class?" - Roberts in Fisher v Texas, 2015).https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2015/12/10/9886088/roberts-affirmative-action-physics …

This is a vivid reflection of the utter failure of the scientific community to convey to the public any appreciation whatever of the difference between a scientific result and the process of investigation that leads to scientific results. The practice of science is an art.

"Physical theories are guessed, not deduced; if only deductions were required, every competent hack could be an Einstein or a Feynman." ~ Rainer Kurt Sachs The most important breakthrough discoveries in science are deeply mysterious achievements. Guessing right is hard.

The greatest scientific masters are often profoundly strange, and what makes their work important is that it incorporates a perspective quite alien to their colleagues and predecessors. They see what others miss, and ultimately reveal to others wholly new uses for their eyes.
