My daughter (8) had trouble multiplying 1000 by 10, because (i) 10,000 doesn't have a new name and (ii) "ten thousand" is a bit of a tautological answer. Good mathematical instincts, even if she got it wrong.

So I guess she could multiply 1000 by 2 with no problem, because she'd already met "two hundred", helping her recover from the weirdness of "twenty"?

Interesting how we find ourselves musing over the Gaussian distinction between notions and notations, between the thing and the name for the thing. I can't help thinking that the key point to make about numbers is that we understand them only by relating them to other numbers.
