There is a certain type of centrists who don't know jackshit about anything, just repeat the dumb arguments they read in Le Monde/The New York Times and think everyone who disagrees with their ridiculous views is stupid who have a gift for drawing the worst from me.

Yep. I’ve met some people who, on every subject, aim for the very center of the Overton window. They think they’re moderate but would buy an extreme worldview the second it becomes mainstream.

Dunno. Everyone is influenced one way or the other by the consensus. But only some follow blindly imo. There’s also the falsification of preference, people faking adherence to the norm. History shows that tyranny only needs passivity, not support, from the majority.

Conflict-aversion and a lack of any genuine ethical commitments lead most persons to make expedience their guide. But there are always those who are constituted differently (e.g., Dietrich Bonhoeffer), and some of these persons end up exerting tremendous influence (e.g., Gandhi.)
