I’m on a reading binge that is kind of a Chain Migration (Not Sad!): From Spinoza I was led to Of Human Bondage (Maugham) which led me to Cakes and Ale (Maugham) which is apparently based on a fictional Thomas Hardy, which is leading me to Madding Crowd next.

Note that Maugham is the author of a great many other memorable things besides Of Human Bondage and Cakes and Ale; in particular, I would point you to his literary criticism, and to his short stories, which include much of his best work. His Writer's Notebook is fascinating, too.

Some of his best short stories are freely available at the Gutenberg site, under their original title of publication, "The Trembling of a Leaf." The most famous of these is "Rain," but I would also point to "Mackintosh" and (especially) to "Red" as proof of Maugham's artistry.
